Weird Durer

One more...these may not be conceptually strong but they amuse me nonetheless

I'm still not sure if this is the direction my project will take but I feel I need to try things out so that I know what I do and don't want to do...

another one I just made

contemporary composographs

A composograph is a collage using photography that was used in early tabloid magazines to fabricate otherwise unattainable scenes and depictions of famous people.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Composograph

Because I liked the MJ/Dix similarities I've been searching for other celebrity pictures that resemble fine art portaiture. I found that Egon Schiele looks quite a bit like Edward from the Twilight movies, so I made my own composograph of them:

media, tabloids and truth

I've decided to look at supermarket tabloids for the final project, examining how they exploit and stretch "truths" about celebrities, and how people buy into this [in varying degrees] depending on the believability of the images and how much they want to believe what they see...

In my google image searching I found a hilarious and pretty uncanny image of Michael Jackson that resembled one of the paintings from the Otto Dix exhibition. Check it out:

I loved that particular painting, The Artist's Family (1927) - how Dix's wife is shown as this matriarch figure and he's represented himself as this grimacing, almost deranged looking child...not unlike Jackson and his deranged looking wife on the tabloid magazine. Even the red shirts match...it's so bizarre. I love it.

Planet of the Apoidea

Human technology often mirrors or builds upon (and exploits) animal technologies. In this project I am looking at how animal technologies, in particular the use of pheromones, work in respect to the manipulation and control of a colony of bees. My project will make a satirical comment on human society, particularily of the unabashed struggle for power and control of other species and other humans. Technology is not the end but the means for this acquistion of power.

These are just rough copies.

Pretty pictures + concepts

Instead of working in a linear process I've decided to take all of the pieces I've accumulated over the past few weeks and compile them in a semi-transparent, layered 8.5 x 11 document. I like the idea of digital and analog as being one and the same - that they are layered and complex and both need each other to exist, much like order and chaos. Order springs from chaos and chaos from order, and it's this cycle...however I'm not sure you get that message from this image, unless the title led you in that direction...

I'm not sure whether to print this or display it (digitally) on a projector.

Also I'm afraid the Photoshopping looks too Photoshoppy...thoughts?

The next step

I've taken some photos of the typed and handwritten personal accounts derived from my bank account statements with my iPhone. When I read these statements (from five years ago) it was amazing how many memories, some extremely vivid, came flooding back. I decided to create little memory passages, first typed formally, then handwritten in a journal format. The iPhone photos were an experiment in taking the handwritten account back to digital again, continuing this layered, cyclic relationship between digital and analog. They turned out kind of pleasing to the eye, and I enjoy the somewhat fuzzy, colour-simplified tones it created. I am thinking of taking one (especially the notebook one) and turning it into a drawing or painting...

Cheeseburgers are taking over my life

I'm selling these catnip cheeseburger toys at Puces POP Montreal next weekend and the production of them (sewing, sewing, and more sewing) is consuming all of my spare time...more posts - school related - to come!

These little devils take about 35-45 minutes to make each

An ad I made for the printed POP Montreal directory:

I really need to make a real website

I even have Dreamweaver on my computer but I don't really know how to use it. Sad, I know. It's like the mandolin hanging on my wall that I haven't figured out how to play yet. Anyway for now I have a Facebook "Fan" page featuring all of the things I make: drawings, jewelry, crafts, knitted items, whathaveyou. So you can check it out here to see what kinda stuff I do....
